What to Wear for Your 50th, 60th or 70th Birthday
A big birthday is a celebration of you, and you deserve to feel fabulous. Many of my customers come to me before a 50th, 60th or 70th, often unsure where to start. Here's my advice.
What should I wear to my 50th birthday party?
Wear something that feels like the very best version of you. For an evening party, a sequin dress or a glamorous jumpsuit is hard to beat. For a lunch or garden party, a bold print or a beautiful jewel colour feels joyful and special.
Fifty is a wonderful age to embrace colour. If you've always played it safe in black, this is your moment to try sapphire, emerald or ruby.
What should I wear to my 60th birthday?
Choose a shape that makes you feel confident and comfortable, because you'll be hugging, chatting and hopefully dancing for hours. Look for:
- A defined waist, with a sash or wrap.
- A sleeve, if you prefer your arms covered: a 3/4 sleeve is elegant and practical.
- A flattering neckline, such as a V or wrap.
- A skirt with movement, like a swing or sarong skirt.
My Coco sequin swing dress ticks every box: a faux wrap bodice, a midi swing skirt, ruffle cuffs and a soft stretch sequin that's comfortable all night.
What should I wear to my 70th birthday?
Elegance and comfort together. A beautifully cut dress in a fabric with a little stretch, a sleeve and a length you love. Many women choose a ballerina or maxi length for a 70th, because it feels special and graceful. The Stevie ruffle dress in a joyful print or the Claridges velvet dress are lovely choices.
Are sequins appropriate for a milestone birthday?
Absolutely, at any age. The secret is choosing a sequin dress with a flattering cut and a sleeve, rather than something short and skimpy. Sequins catch the light, photograph beautifully and make everyone smile. Try the Gold Sequin Swing Dress or the navy sequin jumpsuit.
What if I'm hosting a birthday lunch rather than a party?
A printed shirt dress or wrap dress is perfect: smart, pretty and comfortable. My Zip Pocket Dress and Suzannah dresses are both lovely for daytime celebrations.
What colours are most flattering as we get older?
As our hair and skin tone soften, rich jewel colours and clear brights often bring a glow to the face. Navy, plum, sapphire, emerald and deep rose are flattering on most women. Very pale beiges and greys can sometimes drain colour from the face, so wear them away from your face or add a bright lip.
Should I wear something I can wear again?
I always encourage it. A dress you love should go on to weddings, Christmas parties and dinners. Choose something versatile and you'll get years of joy from it.
