What to Wear to the Races, Royal Ascot and Glyndebourne

Grace electric blue stretch satin shirt dress by Katya Wildman

The British summer season is a wonderful excuse to dress up. Here's my guide to looking elegant at the races, Royal Ascot and Glyndebourne, while staying comfortable on the lawn.

What is the dress code for Royal Ascot?

Royal Ascot has the strictest dress code of the season, and it varies by enclosure. In the Royal Enclosure, women traditionally wear dresses or skirts of modest length, falling just above the knee or longer, with straps of at least one inch, and a hat rather than a fascinator. Jumpsuits are usually allowed if they're full length. Other enclosures are a little more relaxed. The rules change from time to time, so always check Ascot's official guidance before you go.

A midi or ballerina-length shirt dress is a perfect, rule-friendly choice. My Grace and Suzannah dresses are popular for Ascot.

What should I wear to the races?

For other race days, such as Cheltenham, Epsom, Goodwood or York, the dress code is usually smart rather than formal. Think a pretty dress with a coat or jacket, a hat or fascinator and comfortable heels. Spring meetings like Cheltenham call for warm layers, a smart coat and boots.

What should I wear to Glyndebourne?

Glyndebourne traditionally has a black tie atmosphere, and many guests wear evening dress. Because of the long interval picnic on the lawns, a long or ballerina-length dress in a fabric that won't crease is ideal. Bring a wrap or coat for the evening, as it can get chilly. A flowing maxi such as the Stevie or a statement shirt gown like the Signature works beautifully.

What shoes should I wear on grass?

Block heels, wedges or heel protectors. Stilettos sink into lawns! Bring a pair of flats in your bag for the walk back to the car.

Do I need a hat?

For Royal Ascot's Royal Enclosure, yes, a hat is required. At most race meetings a hat or fascinator is traditional but optional. Choose one that coordinates with your outfit, and make sure it's comfortable to wear for several hours.

How do I stay comfortable all day?

  • Choose breathable fabrics like stretch cotton or crepe.
  • A dress with pockets is invaluable for your phone and tickets.
  • Bring a light coat or wrap: the British summer is unpredictable.
  • A ballerina-length skirt keeps you covered and elegant when sitting on a picnic blanket.
