Why Shirt Dresses Are Perfect After a Mastectomy
Over the years, many women have come to my showroom after a mastectomy, often with a wedding or a big celebration on the horizon and a real sense of dread about finding something to wear. This blog is for them, and for anyone supporting someone through it.
Why shopping for an occasion dress after a mastectomy can be so stressful
Let's be honest: it can be really hard. After surgery, your body may feel unfamiliar. You might be wearing a prosthesis or a post-surgery bra, adjusting to a reconstruction, or simply choosing to go flat. Scarring, tenderness, lymphoedema or tightness in the arm and chest can all make getting dressed more complicated.
And then you walk into a shop, and so many occasion dresses seem designed to make it harder:
- Off-the-shoulder and strapless styles that need a strapless bra, which often won't hold a prosthesis securely.
- Plunging or low necklines that can reveal a bra, a prosthesis or scarring when you'd rather they didn't.
- Thin straps and backless designs that rule out a supportive mastectomy bra.
- Clingy fabrics that show every line of a bra or a difference in shape between sides.
- Button fronts that gape, so you spend the whole event checking and adjusting.
- Back zips and tight sleeves that are difficult to manage if you have reduced arm movement.
It's no wonder that what should be a joyful occasion can feel overwhelming. Many women tell me they've cried in changing rooms or simply given up and worn something they didn't love. You deserve so much better than that.
Why a shirt dress can be the perfect solution
A well-designed shirt dress solves so many of these problems at once:
- It has proper shoulders and sleeves, so you can wear your usual mastectomy bra with full, comfortable straps.
- The neckline is under your control. You decide how open or closed you want it to be.
- It opens at the front, so there's no need to lift your arms over your head or reach behind your back for a zip, which can make a real difference if your shoulder or arm movement is restricted.
- The structure of a woven or substantial fabric skims over the chest rather than clinging, so any asymmetry is far less noticeable.
- A defined waist keeps the focus on your silhouette as a whole.
Zip-front dresses: you choose exactly how high
My Zip Pocket Dress has a front zip that you can wear as high or as low as you like. Zip it right up for coverage and confidence, or open it a little for a softer V-neck. It can't gape like buttons can, and it's easy to do up with one hand.
The bodice is cut in a substantial Italian stretch cotton or a luxurious ponte Roma jersey, which gently holds and smooths without clinging. It's machine washable, has pockets and comes in dual sizing, which many women find helpful if their weight has changed during treatment.
Button dresses with a concealed placket: no gaping
If you prefer the elegance of a buttoned shirt dress, look for a concealed placket. This is a hidden band of fabric behind the buttons that stops the front from gaping or pulling, so nothing shows between the buttons however you move, sit or hug.
My Suzannah and Signature dresses are designed this way. They have a waist-defining sash, a beautiful ballerina or maxi length and a neckline you can button as high as you choose. For a special occasion, both can be made for you in silk dupion, with adjustments to suit your body.
Other styling tips after a mastectomy
- Prints are your friend. A well-scaled print draws the eye and disguises any difference between sides.
- Texture helps too. Jacquard, brocade and velvet have a gentle structure that skims the body.
- Ruffles and drape, like those on my Stevie dress, add softness across the chest.
- A beautiful scarf, wrap or necklace draws attention upwards to your face.
- Bring your bra and prosthesis to any fitting, so you can see exactly how a dress will look on the day.
I'm a dress designer, not a medical professional, so if you have questions about bras, prostheses or lymphoedema, your breast care nurse is the best person to ask. Charities like Breast Cancer Now also have helpful information about clothing after surgery.
