Dress for Your Season: Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter Colour Palette Dresses

Sasha dress in pine green, a Winter colour season dress by Katya Wildman

Does anyone else remember a book from the 1980s called Colour Me Beautiful? I do! I found a copy as a teenager and read it cover to cover, poring over the four seasons and working out which one everyone I knew might be. I've been fascinated by colour ever since.

So many of you have asked me to sort my dresses by colour season, and here it is! If you've had your colours done, you'll know the moment the right drape goes on: your eyes sparkle, your skin glows and you look instantly rested. I've compiled this guide using the House of Colour seasonal palettes, so you can find the dresses made for your colouring.

I'm a Winter, but secretly I identify as a Spring 😂 There are so many colours in the Spring palette that I absolutely love to wear: coral, poppy red, aqua and sunny chartreuse. Honestly, I wear colours from every season, and I wear them confidently and happily. So wear what makes you feel wonderful! If you'd love to discover your own season, the lovely people at House of Colour can help you find a consultant near you.

Dressing for a wedding colour scheme

If you're mother of the bride or groom, or part of the wedding party, you might be asked to fit in with the bride's colour scheme. The lovely thing is that there's almost always a version of the wedding colours in your palette, so you can match the day and still look your most radiant. Here's how I help my customers:

  • Find your season's version of the colour. Almost every colour has a shade for each season. If the scheme is green, a Winter might choose pine, an Autumn olive and a Spring a brighter leaf green.
  • Choose a colour that crosses seasons. Navy, plum, wine and pillarbox red flatter more than one season, so they're wonderfully easy to wear.
  • Finish with your colours. A necklace, earrings, a scarf or a lipstick from your palette is the perfect finishing touch.
  • Have it made in your exact shade. Our made-to-order silk dupion comes in over a hundred colours, so we can match the wedding palette in the version that flatters you most.

Already had your colours done? Bring your swatch wallet when you visit the showroom. So many of my customers do, and it makes matching your palette a joy, especially for made-to-order dresses.

Each dress carries its season code: WI for Winter, SU for Summer, AU for Autumn and SP for Spring. Many colours suit more than one season, so you'll see the others in brackets. SP (also AU) on our chartreuse Grace means Springs and Autumns can both wear it. Electric blues work for Winters and Springs, navy for Winters, Summers and Springs, jade and lagoon teals for Autumns, and wines, burgundies, plums, clarets and deep forest greens for Autumns as well as the cool seasons.

And everyone can wear pillarbox red. A bright, true red flatters every season, so every bright red dress here is marked All seasons.

Not sure of your season?

  • Winter: cool undertone, high contrast. Pine green, sapphire, true red, black and white.
  • Summer: cool undertone, soft contrast. Plum, rose, powder blue and soft silver.
  • Autumn: warm undertone, rich and deep. Rust, olive, chocolate, gold, bordeaux, mulberry and forest green.
  • Spring: warm undertone, clear and bright. Coral, poppy, aqua and ivory.

Cool · Clear · High contrast

The Winter Edit

Winters carry drama. Cool undertones and strong contrast between hair, skin and eyes mean you can wear colour at full strength. Think pine forests, sapphire, true red and the inky navy of a midnight sky. Pure black and crisp white sit beautifully next to your face, where on other seasons they can drain.

Pine & Emerald

Pine green is the Winter green: deep, cool and clear. Emerald and jade bring the jewel-box sparkle. The deep forest greens, the jade and our Black Watch tartan suit Autumns too.

Electric & Royal Blue

Electric blue has always been one of the most popular colours in my showroom, and so many of you love to wear it. It's a blue so bright it almost hums, it makes Winter eyes look extraordinary, and Springs can wear it beautifully too.

Pillarbox Red & Claret

Bright pillarbox red is the one colour every season can wear, so these are marked All seasons. The deeper claret and dark red velvets suit Winters and Autumns.

Violet & Fuchsia

Cool purples and shocking pink. Wear them close to the face and watch your skin light up.

Inky Navy

Winter's softer alternative to black. Plain navy is one of the easiest colours to wear, and suits Summers and Springs too. Navy with polka dots and inky roses keeps the contrast without the severity.

Jet Black & Pure White

Only Winters truly own both ends of the scale. Singapore Gardens adds verdant green and bold blooms on an inky black ground.

Cool · Soft · Blended

The Summer Edit

Summers glow in colours with a little grey in them, like an English garden in soft morning light. Cool undertones and gentle contrast mean dusty plums, rose, powder blue and pearly silver flatter far more than anything harsh or neon. Summers can wear navy and the Coco pink sequin from the Winter edit too.

Plum & Wine

Soft, cool berry tones. Plum is one of the most flattering colours a Summer can own. Deeper plums, wines and burgundies work for Winters and Autumns too, just think of Autumn's bordeaux and mulberry.

Powder Blue & Denim

Sky, Pacific and soft denim blues. Easy, calming and endlessly wearable.

Rose & Blush

Sugar pink, blush and garden roses. Pretty, never sugary, on cool soft colouring.

Soft Silver & Mushroom

Summer's neutrals are pearly and greyed. Silver shimmer and a cool mushroom are kinder than black.

Warm · Rich · Earthy

The Autumn Edit

Autumns are warm and golden, with a depth that suits rich, spiced colour. Rust, chocolate, olive and burnished gold look like they were made for you. Busy heritage prints and leopard sit naturally on Autumn colouring too. Autumns, don't miss the bordeaux wines, mulberry plums, clarets, deep forest greens, Black Watch tartan, jade and lagoon in the other edits, all marked AU.

Rust, Chocolate & Olive

The heart of the Autumn palette, and it looks even richer in velvet.

Burnished Gold & Brocade

Warm gold rather than icy silver. Brocade and sequins catch candlelight beautifully.

Old Masters & Heritage Prints

Baroque florals painted in oil-rich tones, warm roses on cream, and a classic tartan.

Leopard

Leopard is a warm neutral in disguise, and Autumns wear it best of all.

Warm · Clear · Bright

The Spring Edit

Springs are warm and luminous, with a fresh, sunlit clarity. Clean colours with a yellow base suit you best: coral, poppy red, aqua and zesty chartreuse. Swap stark white for warm ivory and you'll look instantly brighter. Remember the electric and bright blues and the plain navies in the Winter edit work for you too.

Coral & Hot Red

Our Tahitian Red Rose print is a warm, hot red with vivid pink blooms. A joy on Springs, and bright enough for every season.

Aqua & Lagoon

Clear, warm turquoise, like shallow water over white sand. The deeper lagoon teal suits Autumns too.

Chartreuse & Warm Ivory

Spring green with a hint of sunshine, and the warm ivory that replaces stark white. Both work beautifully on Autumns too.

Your exact wow colour, made for you

So many of my customers who've had their colours done bring their swatch wallets with them when they visit, and we hold each fabric right up against their palette. It's especially brilliant for made to order. The Signature and Suzannah dresses can be made in over a hundred silk dupion colours, so together we can find your exact wow shade.
